I know you are not running Fedora Core, but this might be a good start:

Also, I know my Dell Inspiron has a Fn-F5 (or whatever it is) key that
will disable the hardware. This is enabled/changed in BIOS. Here is
another site talking about Ubuntu supporting the hardware key for your
X40. Again, not your exact distro, but a good place to gather info:
