Thanks for the info. I'll look into the 500 error.
As for the gz files returning "text.plain", I had to take out the mime
type mapping of .gz to application/x-gzip in order to allow retrieval
via wget, otherwise my apache2 server always returned a "403 error".
Also, the ONLY successful poll I've seen from google is of the
http://www.modellocate.com/sitemap.gz so it seems Google is smart
enough to read the header and determine that the text/plain mime type
is incorrect and processes the file as .gz.
Therefore I suspect the issue has something to do with the 500 error.
Why Google seems to get a 500 error 80-90% of the time yet all other
tests I run retrieve the files 99.9% of the time is still a question.
Thanks for the input.
If anyone else has suggestions on what to look for please advise as I'm
out of ideas.
