Go to http://www.google.com/apis/maps/signup.html to sign up for a key.
In the text field below "My Web Site URL:" enter the full name of your
site, e.g. "http://localhost/app1" if you want to access the maps on
your machine or "http://www.mysite.com" if you want to access the maps
on a web site. If you want to view the map, access
"http://localhost/app1/SomeMapPage.html" or
"http://www.mysite.com/SomeMapPage.html".

Please note that if you register a key for "http://localhost/app1", you
will be able to see only the maps in that folder and not those in a
subfolder (e.g. "http://localhost/app1/test.html" will work, but
"http://localhost/app1/test1/test.html" will not). If you wish to
generate a key for the whole web site, enter only the domain name (e.g.
"http://localhost") and this way you will be able to access the maps in
any subfolder.
