Historic and Demographic Info Needed

I'm writing an article for educators about the value of open
architecture and would like to use the Google Maps API as an example of
how open APIs can quickly create an explosion of useful tools. To that
end, I need some information. Does anybody know when the Maps API was
first made public, roughly how many keys Google has issued, and the
number of public mash-ups out there today?
