Legality of screenshots of maps for tutorials ?
I just saw http://www.alertdude.com/
Notice the instructions animation (Which I really really like, very
slick)
Unfortunately, and I hope I don't get the maker in trouble here, but
surely that's a copyright violation ? The map tiles are copyright and
not to be used outside the map surely ?
I would love to do something like this myself, so some clarification
would be nice...
One idea that I came up with was maybe if it was but google was
understanding to the situation, it could maybe obtain permission from
the map owner for things like that to be done in a certain area eg say
something like "Screenshots at zoomlevel 3 inside the coordinate box
<coords> is OK for purposes of tutorials etc"
Maybe the area around google's offices ;)
One alternative may be to find a free map (maybe an out of date one ?)
and overlay it into the google maps interface and do it from that, or
maybe we could come up with a ficticious map that we could all use for
demos.
That way we wouldn't violate the map maker's copyright.
The alternative I suppose is to try and do a tutorial IN the map. Get
it to move around and do stuff by itself. A floating DIV maybe with a
mouse cursor image in it to imitate the mouse ? Doesn't sound easy...
any ideas ?
