That's the effect of the bug in the API key checking code. When it
decides that your key is invalid, it tries to remove things like
".co.uk" from the end of your hostname to see if what's left is
"google".

There's a bug that causes the API to crash if the next-to-last segment
of your hostname isn't "co", "com" or "off" and your API key is
incorrect.
