It does take a while to get approved and then to get your feed to list,
also it takes time for your images to show, so you need a lot of
patience.

To get listing in search results you need to include as many keywords
as possible in your description and product title. So, yes it's pretty
much similar to getting into Google. I personally would add all the
products to a feed to get more of a chance of listing. That would also
give you more opportunities to add keywords.
