[Google-Desktop] Re: I've gone Microsoft....first report

AV, I'm going to try it....again.

I HAVE uninstalled and reinstalled, roughly five times since late
September when my problems started. Wonder if I've completely gotten
rid of my previous index?

Several times during the uninstall, I told it to preserve my index. A
couple times it did. A couple times it appeared not to have and
completely reindexed which (with about 550,000 files to index) takes
days. Since I'm on limited solar power (meaning I have a finite amount
of electricity stored in batteries) I'm going to have to wait a couple
days before I try this again (because I let the computer run all night
two nights ago to let Microsoft get a good start on its index. So I
sapped a lot of my reserve electricity.)

I bet it DOES have something to do with a corrupted index...or some
other corrupted file.

And, like the cheerleaders, I LOVE GoogleDesktopSearch--when it's
working right. And I'd love to have it working right again. But can't
afford to spend much more downtime with it.

Two issues:

- If I can't get a complete, clean uninstall, is it OK to just delete
any Google folder?

- Concurrent with my Google Desktop problems beginning, I had
downloaded/installed (for a few hours) Google WebAccelerator. I've
never been able to get a complete uninstall of that. It still shows up
with about 1.8 mb of files in the Windows Add/Remove panel, but won't
uninstall (can't find the installation file, and I've searched my hard
disk for it and it doesn't seem to exist). In addition, I can no longer
find a Google Web Accelerator folder on my hard drive. So I'm not sure
what to wipe out to get rid of the remnants of that.

Finally, in response to someone's comment here: Yes, I did contact
Google Support, multiple times, back in October and November. Basically
all I was told (repeatedly) was to uninstall, re-download and
re-install. And I did. And it didn't help.

No idea just what is broken. I do have a pretty good, recent laptop
here. But for some reason, CPU usuage has gone crazy since late Sept.
The process that takes over is GoogleDesktopIndex.exe. And in my
latest installation, I cannot get Google to index Outlook Express
emails. And I have come to depend upon it for that. (I've been
filing/hoarding emails since 1994 and--since I make my living as a
researcher and writer--have a couple hundred thousand to sort through
from time to time. Really came to LOVE Google for its ability to
quickly, quickly locate a particular email with just a few keywords.)

In the meantime, Microsoft does seem to index quite a bit more slowly
than Google, I'm now at 145,000 files indexed after about 24 hours of
run time (though I was working the computer hard for about 12 of those
hours).

Thanks for the advice and encouragement.

And, yeah, I think everyone can tell that I WANT my GoogleDesktop to be
working, that I miss it, and that I'm not excited that I'm having to
experiment with Microsoft in order to regain control of my computer and
regain some desktop search capability.

Once my solar system has recovered enough juice, I'll attempt another
complete uninstall and reinstall and re-index with Google. And will
report back. Probably mid-week next (we're expecting snow over the
weekend and that means overcast and I won't have optimal electricity).
Plus, I think I should let Microsoft complete its index before I start
messing with Google again.

Best,
kwc
