lots (2000+) of markers in api map

hi,
i created a map which has about two thousand markers, imported from an
xml file.
if i try to load the map, my browser starts instantly, displaying the
map and then freezes for approx 35 seconds. after that, the markers are
in place and it works. but is there a way of speeding things up a
little?
