Whenever you want to see if something *really* worked, here's a nice
little keyboard shortcut you may not know. I think this works in
Gnome as well as KDE, since it's an X thing, but I could be wrong.

ctrl+alt+backspace will restart the x server without rebooting the
machine. It can save time. I suppose this could cause some system
instability, but I don't think that should happen given the state of
Linux's windowmanagers ATM.
