[lug] Re: Something for everybody

Okay,  this is fun.  I'm Kari, married 6 years to dh Bruce, also a geek.  We live on a farm south of Chicago.  I wear many hats:

Mom (2 little guys)
Copywriter (part time -- my second-favourite professional activity)
Teacher (Math, Chemistry, Computers, Religion -- depends on the day / semester)
Consultant (Mostly XP / Server 2000 or 2003 in small-medium businesses)
Youth minister (volunteer / weekends)
Foster mom (though no current placements)

I have taught everything from Preschool 3 year olds  (in a computer lab) to Calc at the community college.  Each activity is part time.  I am in school w/ the little guys teaching computer stuff 3 mornings a week; other stuff like the technical and marketing businesses are afternoon and evening pursuits.  Everyday brings something new and I am quite busy.

I am a linux newbie, but so far I like it a lot.  My goal is to get at least 1/2 of my customers to adopt linux in their work environments by the end of 2007.  As the distros get better and I figure stuff out, I believe evermore that this is an attainable goal.  I just disassembled my Win2000 lab and am building an edubuntu palace.  So far, so good.  Lots of great free stuff in the repository.  :)   I too am a debian fan, but my only other exposure is SuSE 9.1 -- yuck.  The guy that built the SuSE 9.1 server at school was either total moron or evil genius.  Either way, he taught the box to think for itself.  Its erratic behaviour finally sent me over the edge.  Enter Ubuntu.  Now I'm happier, but we have a long way to go in terms of setup.

Sorry to write a novella -- hope you're not bored to tears.  There is nothing worse than being bored.  If are ever in the midwest and want to ride on a tractor, stop on in.

kari
