Ken,
I put together a couple of examples of how to do different colored
markers (based off information in the xml file, but you should be able
to adapt them to your map):

(using the little "ridefinder" icons from google)

http://www.geocodezip.com/basic8h.asp?filename=example_icons.xml
(same size and shape as the default maker, just different colors)
