Try Terra-Server. It is free. It is fast. It is public domain but it
just covers the US. Great aerial views but no maps except topographic
charts.

I will be happy to give you my UTM conversion code. I know you are
clever enough to figure it out on your own.
To the best of my knowledge, you can use Yahoo's tiles in
non-commercial applications. Their NAVTEQ tiles are almost identical
to Google's NAVTEQ tiles. The trig is virtually unchanged if you flip
the y-axis & add one to the zoom level. Again, the UK is not covered.
Please post other legal tile sources you may know of.
