Re: Should I upload the .xml or the .xml.gz version?

Hi,
You can use both the sitemap in xml format or the compressed
.xml.gz version but....
- If your sitemap file is very large, the gzipped version
might be better
- Attention with the gzipped version
created by the Google Python sitemap generator
when you specify in the config file the gzipped version with
something like
store_into="/var/www/docroot/sitemap.xml.gz"
in the site node (where /var/.... are replaced with
your specific path name).
Somebody else (Stu) noticed that the
full path name of the file appears in the gzipped file,
accessible for others to see.
A way around this, if you use the Google Python sitemap generator,
is to create the xml sitemap file with something like
store_into="/var/www/docroot/sitemap.xml"
in your config.xml file, and then to use the gzip command
(outside the Python script) to gzip your sitemap file.
If you are using a Unix(linux) shell window you can see
how the file name appears in the compressed file
by reading the first lines given by the command
$ more sitemap.xml.gz
(all characters, with the exception of the file name, will appear of
course strange).

This is just a suggestion, hopefully the Google team
for the Python sitemap generator will solve this problem
of the full path name in the compressed sitemap file
soon.
