It's quite possible therefore that the antivirus scan feature is not
introduced universally? I for one have no new link in my gmail page to
say that my gmail now has the av feature. And I still didn't see any
'scanning' indication when carrying out the suggested (by Fanis) larger
attachment test. Ah well, it's all still beta and who knows how Gmail
will look when it finalises.

As with all new features in Gmail the anti-virus scanning feature is
being rolled out in a phased manner. You will know you got it when the
"New! Virus protection and more" link appears in your New features area.

I doubt anyone here will tell you that with 100% certainty. All anyone
can say (unless they have inside knowledge of things) is that Gmail
seems to be here to stay. Google has been working on Gmail for a while
now, it has a money-generating schema, it's rather popular, and it's
being integrated with Google's other products (such Google
Desktop/Taskbar, Picasa, Personalized Home Page).

I forward copies of my gmail to an outlook account and archive it in a .pst
file;
but then I'm paranoid.

I speculate that Gmail will last. I also speculate that eventually,
Google will offer a for-pay version. They'll likely continue to provide
a free version because the targeted ads do make money for them.

To hedge my bet, I too backup all of my Gmail messages. I have an
always-connected PC at home set up that pulls in all new messages to
Thunderbird twice per day. I then periodically archive the files
locally. It's really a nice way to provide some "offline insurance"
should the worst happen...

Gmail doesn't currently search attachments.  Not even the attachments
name.  Any chance for this to change?

I would imagine that it will probably happen eventually.

Is it possible to remove the name of a label?   On the left side of the
screen is a list of all the labels and one of the labels is no longer needed
and I would like to remove it from the list but I can't figure out how to do
this.

  1. Click Edit labels
  2. Find the label and select either rename or remove, based on what
you want to do with said label.
