Yes, as an example, lets say you have a group email with 35 messages. Gmail
will collapse all those messages up until the recent UNREAD ones. If you
are opening that entire grouped message for the first time, then yes, they
will all be expanded. But the next time you open it, only the newest unread
ones wil be open. And if that doesn't work, on the right side of the
message there is a "Collapse All" button that will squish the messages
together, and you can then sort by sender/subject (as a previous poster
already mentioned). I think you will learn these things the more you use
and become familiar with Gmail.

You cannot remove the "conversation" feature at the moment.
Regarding numerous replies on a conversation, you certainly don't have
to scroll down "for miles". Collapse All, then look around, and click
on the header of the email you want to read.
