well number 1) do you give out your email address to websites, registrations, etc...?  If you do, what i recommend is having 2 gmail accounts, one for crap like websites, etc, so all the spam goes to that account.  and the other should be your personal account that you only give out to close friends, etc.  Thats what i do and i get literally zero spam on my main account, and i get tons of spam on my secondary, crappy account.  works like a charm.

and number 2) dont worry about the 11mb spam, because you have plenty of space and you wont run out of it.  Also, i think if spam messages are in your spam folder, then it probably doesnt count as taking up space from your account, since it is afterall junk/spam.
