New collection of tools using Google Maps
I've been working on a collection of tools using Google Maps which is
now available at http://www.jstott.me.uk/gmapsgeotools/index.php
I have incorporated a database of over 5.5 million place names that is
searchable - from there you can find out the local time and time zone,
find out heights above sea level and sunrise/sunset times. I also have
a location finder which (for the UK) gives the latitude and longitude
together with the Ordnance Survey grid reference at that point, as well
as a distance finder.
Note that the time zone data currently only covers the western half of
the northern hemisphere (North America and parts of South America,
Africa and Europe) and height data only covers the UK and northern
parts of France, Belgium and Holland. I hope to have full coverage of
time zone data within a week or so and I will start expanding the
height data as and when I find space enough for the 50GB of data!
The time zone data uses a latitude/longitude lookup rather than a
country/state lookup so it should be more accurate (well, higher
resolution!). I have put a page of how I did this on my blog:
http://blog.jstott.me.uk/?p=20 If people are interested I can make the
data available for download or possibly create a webservice for
timezone data.
Ideas for improvement, bugs, etc. are more than welcome!
Jonathan
