Re: worlwide gazetteer?
The data there is fairly good. I have combined the GNS data with data
for the USA to give full coverage of the world with 5,745,629 place
names.
I have entered them into a database (beware! the database weighs in at
400MB!) and you can search it at
http://www.jstott.me.uk/gmapsgeotools/placefinder.php including
refining by country and state, similar and partial matches (although
these take a lot longer to do that an exact place name match). From
there you can get to any of my other GeoTools to find out the height
above sea level (only in the UK at the moment!), sunrise/sunset times
and the local time and timezone.
The data isn't comprehensive. It doesn't seem to have places with fewer
than around 3000 inhabitants in the UK which obviously restricts its
use somewhat. Still cheaper than paying £150 ($250) for the Ordnance
Survey data. Accuracy is also slightly off outside America, but most
places are located to within a couple of miles.
