A quick update. Using UTM coordinates, nasty things happen at zone
boundaries. Basically, you jump from one set of tiles badly distorted
in one direction to another set of tiles badly distorted in another
direction. It is not a smooth transition.

Do you know whether the synthesized tiles eliminate the discontinuities
at zone boundaries ? If Terra Server is just chopping up the same set
of tiles then running JPEG compression on the composite tile, it will
not solve the problem. If it is using a different set of tiles, it
might solve the problem. It would be a good reason to change.
