Re: Google not finding sitemap or verification file

On two of my sites, the sitemap "status" column never shows "Not
Found".

On my third site, which is hosted on hostgator, a unix one (not sure if
the other sites are on unix or windows), I continually over and over
get "NOT FOUND".

The status goes to OK for just a little while after resubmitting, but
I'll put a reminder in Outlook to check in two days and it always goes
back to "Not Found".

I was wondering if it was okay to do this:

Copy this - we'll call it "sitemap3.xml" -- file to one of my other
sites, where the servers don't seen to be having a conflict, and then
change the properties for this now-not-working sitemap in Google
Sitemaps, so that google will look for this specific xml file at:

www.OneOfMyWorkingSites.com/sitemap3.xml

instead of

www.thehostgator-hosted-site.com/sitemap3.xml

Would google have a problem with pointing to a sitemap file on a
different server than where this xml is the sitemap for?

P.S.. Already tried uploading a .htaccess file with:
<Files sitemap.xml>
ForceType text/xml
</Files>

recommended somewhere here.

Thanks,
Steve
