You mean the alt tag of froogle's placeholder of your missing image?

Since those images are served from froogle (even if the url may include
your image url as a cgi parameter) I don't think that's particularly
diagnostic of the real problem.

Quite true if done correctly, but it sounds cumbersome and slow. Have
you considered having a master image repository, and automatically
synching from there to where you actually want to serve them from. That
way you can have real static images, and you don't have to mess around
with php, curl or mod_rewrite. What you're doing now will almost
certainly break any HTTP caching, costing you more in bandwidth.
