This is correct, unless your site is already partially indexed. In
which case the sitemap file can speed up the indexing / crawling of
your full site (if the site as a whole has enough "value").

Correct -- mostly. MSN can find urls in a sitemap file, if you link the
file from your home page. Yahoo can accept a text list of URLs as a one
time submission. Some Sitemap-Generators can also generate yahoo-style
URL-lists. I believe all major search engines can interpret RSS feeds,
so if you use a RSS feed as your sitemap file, it will also be readable
by the other engines.
