Google Map Team: Please Update Documentation with Need to Wrap InfoWindow Content
The breaking of infoWindow content not wrapped in a div that either
specifies the width or specifies no wrap is well know to be a serious
problem by those who test their maps in Firefox 1.5 and Safari.
However I still see a number of new maps rolling out across the web
whos creators obviously did not test their map in either of these
browsers, and so their infoWindows break. While the solution to this
is easy and is clearly posted on this group, the base problem stems
from the fact that the Google Map API Team has not updated the API
Documentation to help educate new map developers about this
requirement....and indeed it is a requirement.
Here is are the relevant documentation sections on creating an
infoWindow with html where this information should be made known, but
is not:
http://www.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/#Display_Info_Windows_Above_Markers
http://www.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/#The_Info_Window_overview
The lack of documentation on this matter is leading to a lot of bad
maps that will have to be fixed in the near future. The Google Map
team should make adding this documentation of the highest priority.
As just one example of how quickly and wide spread this problem is
becoming, consider http://www.tagzania.com/ which helps others put maps
on their site (example: http://www.tagzania.com/pastehtml/). Their
infoWindows are broken, and thus all websites that now syndicate their
maps are broken (example:
http://stuartblog2.blogspot.com/2005/12/tracking-wifi-sites-in-cleveland.html).
HOW YOU CAN HELP FIX THIS:
If you are reading this post, you can help fix this problem by replying
with a simple "please update the API documentation" in the message.
This will help keep this topic pinned to the top of the group board
until the API documentation is updated.
Thank you
Will
