[lug] Re: Something for everybody
Howdy from Madison, Wisconsin
It all started when I had a copy of Windows 2000 Advanced Server Trial
Edition. After I had the setup to the way I wanted it to the trial
eventually expired. So I decided instead of cracking the OS I would
switch to Linux...that was about a year and a half ago. I first
started with Red Hat 7 then RH 9, converted to Fedora Core 2 upgraded
that to Fedora Core 3 then to FD 4...so far my server has stuck to
that. Running on a PIII 500 mhz it's a webserver, printserver,
fileserver, and primary domain controller for a windows network.
Later (around April) I got a laptop so I was installing Fedora 3,
unfortunately it did not recognize my wireless nic. Mainly because it
had kernel 2.4, so I decided to search. I attempted to install
Madriva, which did not recognize the hard drive. Then I attempted
Gentoo, that too did not recognize the hard drive. I tried a couple
more distros until I bumped into Ubuntu. With Hoary edition it
recognized all pieces of hardware, I stuck with it for a while. Later
I was getting sick of Gnome and wanted to use KDE. So I installed
Kubuntu, unfortunately at that time (and until recently) Kubuntu was
not quite ready yet. So I ventured out to Debian or any other Debian
based distro. Debian with Kernel 2.6 does not recognize my cd-rom,
wireless nic, and video card. So I used a jumbled distro which
contained the Ubuntu Kernel (with the use of a minimal installation)
and Debian testing/unstable packages. Almost everything worked except
for the video card, finally dropped that after breaking it. I tried
Kubuntu and updated it to as much as possible with the use of some
Debian Unstable packages (to get openoffice.org 2.0 non beta version.)
Everything is working almost exactly the way I like it. :)
As for myself I work full time, attend college full time and should
receive my bachelors in April. On my spare time I program in php,
dilly with Linux, play some computer games, and lastly try to convert
the general populous to Linux...it's not just an OS it's a life!
