[Gmail-Users] Re: Happy New Year!

The point of BCC is that "nobody knows" that the message was BCCed.
Each BCCed recipient's mail server will only see the From:, To:, and
CC: fields e-mail addresses. Those SPAM blocking tools you're talking
about look for empty To and CC fields. If you use at least one real
address in the To or CC field, they normally let it through. The only
other way they know it was massively BCCed is if they are receiving
many copies for their subscribers, but they all appear as individual
e-mails, so they'd have to put it together. Some do as a means of
detecting SPAM sent with a real-looking, but faked To address, but
they usually only make the connection when it is a very high number of
receivers (ie all@hotmail.com).

I have been stopped by those filters when I used BCC exclusively, and
now always put at least one address in the To line, and haven't been
stopped yet.

I use BCC for various groups of friends from different associations,
so a single mailing list (like this) wouldn't be appropriate, and no
one likes to be involuntarily added to a mailing list.

I do use a list-serv for one group of friends, and have found some
disturbing problems with it. Since the list-serv takes care of
delivery and response (bounce) I don't see any of the messages, so if
someone "falls off" the list, I don't know it. We've lost nearly have
the membership of the list, but since some have been off for a while
before being noticed, no one was able to re-establish contact. When I
get a bounce, I'm usually able to make contact through a mutual friend
and we get the new address right away.
