Whoops you're right.

When I installed PostgreSQL last summer, it came with PostGIS by
default, so I tend to assume everyone has it on/installed (which is
obviously not the case).

So to Scott -- my method will only work if you have the PostGIS
extension installed on your PostgreSQL server.
