Browsing Interface
I don't know what Google has in it's video library. I know it's got
some old and new stuff from CBS and that users are allowed to submit
their own videos... and that's about it.
When I go to google video's homepage, I'm presented with a search box
and some random samples of videos that are available. I still have no
clue what Google Video has (with the obvious exception of the 10 or so
that litter the homepage).
In fact, there seems to be no real way to know what Google Video has in
it's collection. If I happen to think of something, I can type in a
query. But lets face it, when I go to Blockbuster Video, I'm walking
around aimlessly... looking at what they got for something I might
want. All I know I want is entertainment. I'm willing to drop $2 for
a cool tv show, but how can I when I don't know what I want to watch?
There really needs to be a way to quickly and easily browse this
library. Take a look at the music services; iTunes, Napster, Yahoo,
are all easily browsable, some even make suggestions based on your
tastes. Yeah, Google video is new so I'm sure it's not finished yet.
But right now, the interface makes that awesome library of video damn
near unusable.
That Google Images styled interface was appropriate for a public
search, but not at all for searching a private database. I want to
browse (NOT search!) by genre, artist, tv series, network, etc. And
when I don't know what I'm looking for, I need a list of each of the
aforementioned criteria that is available so I can find something cool.
C'mon, this is 1990's relational database basics.
I don't mean to rant. I love you Google. Peace out.
