OK, I've put a version into my tutorial.

I've tweaked it to pop up the tooltips when the mouse passes over the
corresponding sidebar entry, as well as over the marker.

I've added "overflow:hidden" to the tooltip <div>. This slightly
improves the East edge effect in Firefox, and causes it to behave as it
does in IE. Without "overflow:hidden" FF 1.06 makes the tooltip div
become narrower and narrower as it is created nearer to the East edge of
the map. With "overflow:hidden" it never becomes narrower than the
shortest word.
