I think you are going to find (in v1 anyway) that no matter what you
do, that many markers will not go well with IE. You might want to
consider clustering or another method of limiting the marker count to
around 50 or less. Also, consider the situation where someone has a
slower connection or older computer. 600 markers would choke them to
death.

Another thing, performace can be enhanced by pre-loading marker images.
This keeps the repeated calls to the server for the image down to a
minimum.
