If you are verifing a new sitemap, just delete it and start over. I had
read that they had made some bug fixes. I had the same experience with
the errors. I am not patient enough to check back, so click verify
immediately and it always works. Like I said start over. You will
probably have to put a new google verification html page on your root
though, but well worth getting your pages indexed especially if it is
dynamic site.
