Site map won't verify due to parsing error,

When I load the sitemap at the beginning of each line that starts with
"url" a red "-" appears.
"- <urlset xmlns="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84">
- <url>"

Other that that the format is exactly like the sample Google provides.
What do I need to do to correct this?
