[lug] Re: Server software
Your processor architecture only really becomes an issue when you're
talking about re-building things (such as MySQL).
There are performance increses available if you rebuild MySQL with pgcc
rather than gcc and set the complier flags a bit differently.
Unfortunately on some AMD platforms this can be a very bad idea,
however using AMD you most likely don't need to try to squeeze that
extra 2 1/2 % of speed out of your server.
Unless re-inventing the wheel I suggest an Amd Barton for any beginner.
They're cheap enough to give anyone with $75 and and a few extra parts
a seperate linux box and make really good little web servers if you
combine them with a smaller more sensible alternetive to apache such as
Abyss (www.aprelium.com)
They're also cheap enough to play with clusters if you like to really
tinker.
Glad to see another AMD fan :)
