[Gmail-Users] Re: Cancelling my account

i would just recommend that even though you dont want to use Gmail anymore, I wouldnt cancel your account for fear of losing your chosen screen name.  Lets say in a year when Gmail goes public and they fix alot of things you didnt like, or they change it for the better, etc, and you want to sign up again, you would have lost your screen name/email address.  You might be better off just switching to a new email system, but keep gmail anyway.  It isnt hurting anything to just leave the account open and idle.

The only reason i am recommending this is because this happened to 2 people close to me; my girlfriend and mother.  My girlfriend got mad at me and decided to close the gmail account that i "setup" for her (out of spite i guess).  Well when we made up she wanted to get her account back, but she couldnt get her same email address back, oven though there was nobody else using it, it was locked and gone forever.  My mom did the same thing, she was thinking about switching from AOL to Gmail, but decided she didnt like gmail that much.  Well now they are cancelling their AOL and she wants her Gmail back, but she cant get her screen name; she has to set up a new account.

Just my $0.02.

You can find this link yourself after logging in to Gmail, under
Settings --> Accounts.
