Don't know about in the past, but the current Linspire does not
require, or particularly encourage you to run as "root." (They could do
more to encourage you to set up user accounts. I installed the download
version of v5. Maybe the docs in the shrinkwrap product have more to
say on the subject.)

I switched from SuSe to Linspire so my wife would feel more
comfortable. She does very light duty work on a non-connected Win2000
box. She is convinced that no M$ OS has ever crashed in the history of
computing. (Not joking!) She is much happier with the Linspire look and
feel, but she refers to it as a Window$ knock off.

If I can not get Gmail configured as I need it, I guess I'll just have
to start a second Yahoo account. I certainly an grateful that Gmail
convinced others to increase storage space. I hope that "conversations"
soon become an option.
