Without any further info, sounds like X server is having issues
starting. Try changing virtual terminals by using Ctl-Alt-F1. You
should be at a consol log on screen. From there, you can view the X11
logs. /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Post that, and we might be able to help
more.

If the virtual consol doesn't help, you can use a live-CD and boot to
it.

Another option to get it all working command line by default until you
fix it, do this:
Edit the /etc/inittab on your hard drive. Change the run level
"id:5:initdefault:" to a command line only "id:3:initdefault" (Without
quotes). On Ubuntu, change it to level 3 I think. Then you can reboot
to your hard drive distro. If the problem was the X server, you will be
at the command prompt.
