my site is invisible to google

This site dropped out of google's index a few months ago, for no reason
I can discern:
http://stephaniemcglynn.com/

The site's PageRank is now 0 (as reported by the PageRank extension for
Firefox).

I entered the site into the sitemaps system to get stats on it, but
Google claims not to be able to verify ownership. The verification file
is there, and I know I didn't fat-finger the name because I moved it
from another site that Google did succesfully verify. Here's a lynx
trace (with the name obscured):

<shell> lynx -mime_header http://stephaniemcglynn.com/googleb74....html
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Mon, 12 Dec 2005 22:28:58 GMT
Server: Apache/1.3.34
Connection: close
Content-Type: text/html

I created a sitemap manually; google also claims not to be able to find
it, although it's clearly there:
http://stephaniemcglynn.com/sitemap.xml.gz

I can imagine that sites previously determined to be unworthy of the
index are blocked from meaningful participation in the sitemaps system,
because the alternative would be that every junk site owner would throw
up sitemaps in hopes of getting back into the index. But this is just
conjecture, unless anyone here can confirm.

This site does have a few inbound links, non-paid, from sites with
decent pagerank scores (4 to 6), although Google seems not to show
those in its index either.

Anyway, it's strange that the sitemaps system claims it can't retrieve
the verification file nor the sitemap, when both are clearly in place.
