Thank you for your answer bikeman. I just saw your answer today and
started a new thread (sorry for that).
I have done nothing regarding the 404 error page and I do not create a
custom page.
It is true that I have a fairly complex .htaccess file, however. So I
have renamed it as you suggested. This time, there was no immediate
error, but the page was being loaded for several mintues and remained
blank. I tried again some time later - still the same error.
