Here is an example page that adds lettered icons:
http://www.geocodezip.com/basic8i.asp?filename=example_letter.xml
It uses xml for input but you should be able to do the same thing for
your markers.
Be forewarned, Google only has lettered icons that go to "J".
There are numbered icons around as well, you will just need to copy
them to your server if you want to use them.
