Now that is strange. I usually shun the web interface as being too slow
and clumsy for my tastes. However, I did just try using it to reply to
your message (the one I am responding to now). I found that the cursor
defaulted to the end of the post. You clearly stated that a user should
start typing when the cursor defaults to. Keeping those to statements in
mind, how is it that you are guilty of top posting? Perhaps it works
differently for different users.

I don't know about Google Groups' web interface, but Gmail's places the cursor at the beginning of the text box and places all of the previous message below.  I think that many people (including myself) use the Gmail interface to reply to topics.
