[lug] gentoo troubles

hello everyone,
i successfully installed Gentoo 2005.0.. but there is one little
problem.
i dont know the 'root' password.
I installed it 4 time in a row following the instruction so carefully
to make sure i did everything but when it comes to boot and run in the
login menu it asks for a username and a password.
i have no idea what to time whatsoever.
Please help me out to recover the password because i have freaked
here!!

p.s. if there is a way to recover the password without reinstalling
gentoo that would be even better.
