Patience is a virtue with google sitemaps.

Wait for a few days and click on verify again. I hope you've created
the file that sitemaps asked for on your server and is accessible.

That's what I did for my website.

Large site takes longer to crawl and it depends upon how many links you
have to your site as well. My site was over 10000 pages but google
hasn't crawled all of them yet.
