This is an interesting question, it has been discussed
before in this group.
I am not sure exactly what happens,
Googlebot-Image which crawls for images
maybe is not exactly the same as Googlebot which scans sitemaps
and URLs with HTML content, but they are obviously related.
Try and see what happens, I do not think that
it can do any harm to include in the sitemap
URLs of images that you want indexed by Google Images.
