I do not believe that the plain txt file will impede your success.

There are a gaggle of free xml sitemap creators available that you
might try. The one that Google recommends is written in Python, a
programming language (more info avail at http://python.org/) - however
using that particular generator will not likely impact your results.
You might try one of the windows based generators.

One thing you might try is putting a traditional sitemap page on your
site, with a link to it at the bottom of your home page. That way it
will be easier for non-javascript enabled browsers (and search engine
spiders) to identify and locate all the pages of your web site.

BTW, That Hazwoper might be a fun kind of game, something like paint
ball. But maybe with hazardous waste? Or some kind of Nickelodian goo
that looks and feels like hazardous waste.
