also, there's a really cool thing I recently learned about X (really
relearned, but that's not the point)

ctrl+alt+backspace restarts the x server. Try that if you want. It
might work, might not... I find it easier to fix problems if I can at
least (if only temporarily) get into a GUI - I'm not that good with
BASH yet...
