I used to love gnome, it's much simpler than KDE. KDE is nightmare
too(for me).
Now I have wmaker running smoothly, I just love this simple desktop

Never used gentoo, I don't know...

Yes, debian is almost perfect. And apt is like a huge shopping
mall, anything you want. And for developers, debian is so
free.
Now I have a server running debian, to some mirroring and
running apache, it works just fine.
So, if you want a www/ftp server, I suggest Debian!

Yes, ubuntus works just like debian, but have more beatiful desktops.
