Found the beast;

In any reasonable language, the expression '(a)' is identical to
'((a))'.

But it turns out that GPoint((<?=$centerlon; ?> , <?=$centerlat; ?>))
fails, but GPoint(<?=$centerlon; ?> , <?=$centerlat; ?>) succeeds.

So apparently, some expressions are more identical than others!
