The Google Sitemap does not do anything. It's a file that YOU send to
Google with your URls. But the normal Google crawler will be able to
crawl your forum / site anyway already :-).

However, keep in mind that phpBB is notoriously bad seo'd, with lots of
room for "duplicate content" (different URLs with the same content). If
you seriously want to get listed properly, you'll need to do a bit of
work on the stock installation.
