Markers can be updated without incurring long upload/refresh delays.
Take a look at
http://www.econym.demon.co.uk/googlemaps/examples/usemarker.htm
which doesn't actually get the data from anywhere, it's just to
demonstrate how to redraw markers quickly and without incurring massive
memory leaks.
That particular example has a 0.2 second delay. With the delay removed,
it runs at 15 frames per second on my 800MHz computer, using 40% of the
CPU power (I don't know why the CPU is 60% idle).
