What happens is that a call like this
<http://maps.google.com/mapdata?latitude_e6=53815366&longitude_e6=429192
0302&zm=9600&w=600&h=400&cc=us&min_priority=2>

Causes something like the API code to be run on the Google mapdata
server, rather than in the client, and the result is returned as a GIF
image.

It probably isn't too difficult to work out what all the parameters do,
but I'd imagine that automating requests for such GIF image would
violate the Terms of Use.
